Chapter 43 - When we’re Stateside again

Bastia, Corsica

September 1-3, 2015

IT WAS JUST before mid-day on Tuesday, September 1, when the TOMATS moored at the pier in the marina Le Vieux at Port de Bastia, Corsica. Catia, Simona, Rex, and Digger would not disembark; they would stay out of sight while they were at anchor and only come outside when the yacht was back on the open sea again.

Rex had spoken to Rehka a few hours earlier. She had been back in Mumbai for only a little over a week after her visit to Lyon, France where she had helped Rex, Josh, and Marissa in John Brandt’s rescue operation. After the operation, by invitation of Margot Le Maire, in whose rescue operation, nine months ago, she also played a significant role, she had stayed on at the Le Maire family estate for a few more weeks to spend time with Margot and her baby, Rowena.

When Rex told her he needed her for another mission, Rehka didn't hesitate.

“On a luxury yacht off the coast of Italy you say?”

“Yep, equipped with the latest and greatest computer and communications technology you can dream of.”

“Well, what else can a girl wish for.” She chuckled. “I just love working for you Rex—never a dull moment, and I get to meet new people and see the world.”

“Exactly, that’s what’s called job satisfaction. Oh, and on the topic of meeting new people, just so you know, Greg Wade will be joining us.”

There was a brief silence on Rehka’s end, and when she asked, “When should I start packing?” Rex was sure there was a very big smile on her face.

“Right about now would be good. I need you here as quickly as humanly possible.”

“Okay, I’m already on my way to my room to pack.”

“Send me your itinerary when you have it.”

“Will do. I’m looking forward to seeing you and Digger soon.”

And Greg of course.

“We’re looking forward to seeing you too, Rehka. Have a safe trip.”

Chris McArdle must have been talking to Josh and Marissa at about the same time as Rex spoke to Rehka, because less than two minutes after ending the call, Rex got a call from Josh.

“Hey buddy, what’s up?” Josh started. “I thought you’d sworn off violence, handed in your gun and your badge, and entered the priesthood.”

Rex laughed. “Yeah, well I did all of that and applied for entry at the Catholic seminary in Rome, everything went well, they accepted me and all. The problem came when they had to check my references. The only one I had was the Old Man. Need I say any more?”

Josh was roaring with laughter. “I can just imagine how that conversation would have gone.”

“So, Josh, I take it this call from you is to tell me how excited you and Marissa are to see me again?”

“Indeed, we’re excited,” Josh said, “but don’t flatter yourself. It’s not because we’ve missed you, it’s about the prospect of a cruise on a luxury yacht. We should be there by mid-day tomorrow your time.
